Mary Brickey is passionate about teaching at La Europa because of its healing and supportive culture. It is also the intersection of her love for learning, art, mental health and people. Her priority in teaching is to foster a love for learning, to light a fire in the heart and mind of each student, beginning with a love for themselves and for life. In her class, students dive into deep and demanding ideas, apply their learning with creative projects, and are challenged to excel academically as soon as they are ready.
Mary has a BFA in Illustration from BYU, with a minor in Hebrew, and completed graduate work at Beaux-Arts Academy. She paints primarily in oil, with some forays into stained glass, ink, and watercolor. Mary has 14 years of experience in collaborating with other artists for large-scale projects, events, exhibits, and travel. Mary loves adventure, especially on the seat of a bike, a horse, or a motorcycle, and in October of 2022, a motorcycle adventure --er, uh, accident-- took her right leg. She is now solidly back on her feet, one cyborg and one fleshy, and back on her bike. Always get back on that horse!
While art is in her bones (the ones she has left) and she loves connecting and collaborating, it is teaching that runs in her veins. With teachers for parents, and as a parent herself, her family culture has always embraced learning and progress. Mary has taught art and social studies for a combined 12 years, and especially loves working with teens who don’t fit into a traditional learning environment. One of her greatest joys in life is seeing them emerge from the chrysalis of La Europa as a butterfly with its own wings to fly into the next adventure.
